SPECIALITY AUTO-SPORTS, INC.
his company is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA and after 20 years of building VW powered Speedster replicas, in 2002 they launched a 13 year project to develop a mid-engine water-cooled Speedster replica with a whole host of modern safety and performance features.
These Speedster replicas have accurate body dimensions, exterior appearance and interior trim, but are powered by a mid-mounted Subaru fuel injected water-cooled flat-four engine.
They also have a reinforced structural tube chassis and power assisted 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Front suspension improvements include independent Macpherson struts, adjustable coil-over gas struts and rack & pinion steering. Independent rear suspension consists of double upper wishbones with trailing arms, adjustable coil-over shocks with adjustable spring rates and height, plus lateral lower arms.
I was impressed by the clever way they have solved the conflict between retaining original looking side screens and door cappings while offering the convenience of power opening. Their video (linked below) also shows how they have solved the problems of wind noise and water ingress that were a problem with the original cars in the 1950s and with most replicas today.
