Description

Based on a 1972 VW Beetle chassis, correctly registered.A little background on the D!The basic design of the 356 remained the same throughout its lifespan. This car is based on a Type 2 or T2, a second revision of the 356A, introduced in 1957. The Speedster D, renamed Convertible D shortly before its debut in 1958/59 had a taller chrome-framed windscreen and a top somewhere between the original Speedster’s low, simple design and the Cabriolet’s deluxe padded top. Also featured were glass wind-up windows and more comfortable reclining seats. Only about 1,300 Convertible Ds were ever produced and whilst there are still quite a few being driven in the States no original RHD cars remain in the UK.(The higher windscreen is ideal for our taller clients! The current owner is6’5”!)This car was a“turn-key”factory build from Chesil completed in June 2006. It was the first car to be entered by Chesil for an individual SVA test and it is the most recent of only a handful of Convertible D variants on the Speedster built by Chesil. One owner from new, just 11,250 Miles!Chassis/Body: Fully reconditioned shortened 1972 VW Beetle chassis. Unstressed GRP moulded bodyshell with integral box section steel sub-chassis. Drop floor on driver’s side giving an extra 7.5cm headroomEngine/Transmission:1,800cc VW Type 1 twin port, air-cooled, flat four-cylinder petrol producing about 90 bhp at 4,500 rpm (built by Arnie Levics of Somerset). Modified with twin Weber carburettors, electric fuel pump & oil breather system. Type 1 Transaxle 4-speed high ratio manual transmission, rear-wheel drive. Stainless steel Monza exhaust system.Suspension etc: Front independent by torsion beam and trailing arms. Rear independent/trailing arm with CV-jointed drive-shafts. Front servo-assisted disc brakes; rear drums.

Performance: Factory spec claims a top speed about 100 mph, 0-60 mph in 9 sec, average fuel consumption 35 mpg, all of which may be a little optimistic but it does cruise happily at70 mph on the motorway, is more comfortable with the roof down at 50-60 mph off the motorway but much more important than any statistic is that it puts a smile on your face both to drive and to look at!Other features include an enlarged rear seating area with 2 lap belts, making it a 2+2 if rear passengers are small or flexible enough; independent Webasto petrol fuelled heating system; Moto-Lita wood rim steering wheel; external wing-mounted petrol filler cap; JVCDAB radio/CD stereo system; 12-volt power socket and puncture-sealed“bullet-proof”tyres.Walk around video available on request via WhatsApp.
